In this performance, I counted pennies for one hour, representing the United States’ lowest minimum wage, $7.25 an hour. The only constant was moving pennies from one side of the table to another, much like standard busywork. This idea of a uncomplicated gesture 725 times over is repetitive and shows that even an elementary tasks grow tiresome. Counting the physcial price of this wage within the hour, alongside showcasing the mental exhaustion, challenges the value of time and self-worth in a world so revolved around work.
